The Mendips Classic is a hill-climbing enthusiasts dream. A specially designed route around this Area Of Natural Beauty, taking in many challenging climbs, including the iconic ascent of Cheddar Gorge, which featured in the 2018 Tour Of Britain.
In this addition, I will tackle the nerves of leaving home comforts behind and giving advice on how to take the first step towards freedom.
The road snaked downwards, twisting and turning between the gigantic rock faces. The further down you go, the higher the valley towers above. Shooting upwards from the edge of the road, the rocks are distracting. The technicality and the 16% gradient demand respect. One false move on this road can turn you into people pizza.
Normally, I don’t live with regrets, but today would be different. On this day, I very much regretted leaving the house for a bike ride. That is because, before I would return home from it — I reached a new low — the coldest I have ever been!!!
Road cycling is no easy sell – Hey, do you want to fork out loads of money for a bike – wear lycra when you ride it – then suffer on a saddle that has less padding than a knuckle … remind me why I love cycling again. Oh yeah, it is because once you overcome all those obstacles, it provides you with almost limitless places to explore – all self-powered too. The views that this machine can provide you with are worth writing home about.
Everyone names their bike, right? For the sake of this article, I’m just going to assume you do. After all, It is important to give your machine a name – it gives it a character and a personality. It somehow makes it less weird when it comes to proclaiming just how much you love your two-wheeled steed (at least that’s how I justify it to myself).
